E-ONE VM8 Two Door Rescue Pumpers

Affordably priced, firefighting trucks you can depend on

Two-DOOR RESCUE PUMPERS

All-aluminum, huck-bolted body designed for long-term durability and maximum storage capacity. This technology provides a lightweight body without sacrificing structural integrity. The design has been verified with stringent Finite Element Analysis (FEA) where the body is stressed to the maximum chassis Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) and off-road frame twisting to assure long-term durability.

Unlike most formed bodies, the VM8 body uses formed structural shapes that create a skeletal framework that equals the strength and durability of extruded bodies. The body incorporates structural integrity that permits E-ONE to provide an industry exclusive standard 15 year structural warranty. Aluminum is 5052-H34 tensile strength, the same material used for large aircraft for decades. Huck-bolts are used for fastening to prevent wallowing and loosening inherent with commonly used conventional bolts, screws and rivets.

The VM8 body substructure is designed and tested to support the entire body and water tank. Structural shapes are not less than .190 (3/16”) with .250 (1/4”) crossmembers. Salt Spray Testing is to ASTM B 117 guidelines using structural components fastened together and chamber tested for 1000 documented hours. The completed processes depict the effects of galvanic and crevice corrosion.

FEA (Finite Element Analysis) Validated Integrity

All E-ONE bodies have been extensively tested using Finite Element Analysis technology to insure what is designed, built and delivered will stand up to the rigors of the missions for which they are designed. The stress analysis involves computer simulation of the chassis maximum twist against the body to identify any potential weak areas of the design and remove those prior to final design release. The bodies are mounted onto the chassis using an outrigger flex mounting system that permits the body to flex against the chassis, diminishing the transferred stresses to the body. This method of body mounting is far superior to conventional U-bolt or other rigid body mounting procedures.

E-ONE DEBUTS NEW 2019 TYPHOON® CAB AT FDIC INTERNATIONAL

OCALA, FLORIDA – April 10, 2019 – E-ONE, a subsidiary of REV Group and a leading manufacturer of fire apparatus, introduces a new Typhoon® cab for 2019 at booth # 4100 during FDIC International, April 11-13, 2019 in Indianapolis, IN.

The new Typhoon cab features greater visibility for the driver and crew with its new windshield design, reduced profile dash and full size/full opening door windows.

The cab doors have new vertical pull exterior and interior door handles and the cab steps feature an extended lower step and a full-width intermediate step.

Inside the cab is an all new dash constructed from heavy-duty cast aluminum. The center area of the dash is available in both a low profile and a raised design for mounting of sirens, radios and other electronic equipment. The officer’s side has a very low profile as well and is designed to provide additional leg room.

The overhead console is also constructed from heavy duty aluminum and is hinged for easy service access. A raised profile center section is available to provide increased visibility.

The high capacity air conditioning system is all new and designed to provide additional visibility inside the cab by being closer to the ceiling. The A/C system also provides excellent air distribution with eight (8) vents located in the rear of the cab and six (6) vents in the front.

On the front of the cab is a polished stainless steel grill with LED strip lights that can be configured as daytime running lights or turn signals, allowing for additional forward warning lights. LED headlights are standard on the 2019 Typhoon.

E-ONE DISPLAYS MORE VERSATILE 100-FOOT PLATFORMS AT FDIC INTERNATIONAL

OCALA, FLORIDA – April 10, 2019 – E-ONE, a subsidiary of REV Group and a leading manufacturer of fire apparatus, announces enhancements for its aluminum and steel 100-foot platforms on display at FDIC International, April 11-13, 2019 in Indianapolis, IN.

The 100-foot platform enhancements include short jack capability, greater below grade reach, a new fabricated turntable and a new Cummins engine that is 600 pounds lighter, making these aerials more versatile than ever in meeting the demands of today’s fire departments.

While the E-ONE 100’ platform’s crisscross under-slung jack spread of 15’6” requires less space than competitive models, the new short jack option allows the apparatus to be set up with outrigger deployed on only one side of the apparatus using a spread of only 11’2”.

“We are extremely excited about now being able to offer short jack capability on our 100’ platforms,” said Joe Hedges, E-ONE Product Manager. “And with the added stab jack to the end of the outriggers, we gain a tremendous increase in lift, allowing departments to set up on steeper grades when performing rescue operations or fighting fires.”

The redesigned aluminum HP100 platform can now lower to 10 degrees below horizontal, greatly enhancing its rescue capability. “Customer feedback on the steel 100’ platform’s ability to go to -10 prompted us to design this same great feature into the aluminum 100’ platform as well,” said Hedges.

Other notable features of the E-ONE 100’ platforms include:

  • 2.5 to 1 structural safety factor – exceeding NFPA requirements by 25%
  • Large extruded aluminum platform with angled corners and perimeter step
  • Wide ladder sections and tall handrails for safe and secure climbing
  • Advanced Aerial Control System with color displays containing mission specific screens
  • New fabricated turntable design reduces weight for additional equipment capacity
  • Formed integral torque box frame provides a solid foundation for the chassis and aerial
  • New Cummins X12 500 HP engine provides 600 lb weight reduction

E-ONE INTRODUCES STEEL MID-MOUNT PLATFORM AT FDIC 2019

OCALA, FLORIDA – April 10, 2019 – E-ONE, a subsidiary of REV Group and a leading manufacturer of fire apparatus, launches its first steel mid mount platform – the HPS100 Mid-Mount – at FDIC International, April 11-13, 2019 in Indianapolis, IN.

The new HPS 100 Mid-Mount features a 100’ five-section steel aerial made with a patented greaseless roller system for smooth operation and very low maintenance. The newly designed aerial offers a range of motion that lowers to 12 degrees below horizontal. When lowered to below horizontal, the aerial has a front to rear sweep of up to 40 degrees, giving firefighters enhanced rescue capability.

“Designing the aerial with an enhanced scrub zone, or range of motion, helps firefighters place the aerial where needed,” said Joe Hedges, E-ONE Product Manager.

Newly designed from the ground up, the HPS 100 Mid-Mount also features a platform capacity of 1,000 pounds dry and 500 pounds flowing, in addition to the 305 pound equipment load capacity. Other features include:

  • Crisscross under-slung front outriggers with 18’ spread and “H”-Style rear outriggers with only 11’7” spread
  • Functional turntable designed for firefighter staging
  • Outrigger auto-leveling system with optional wired or wireless controller
  • Extruded aluminum quint body with 300 gallon tank, hosebed and over 200 cubic feet of storage space for equipment
  • Enclosed ladder tunnel holding 163’ of ladders including a 35’ 2-section and a 20’ roof

The HPS 100 Mid-Mount tower also has its E-ONE aerial “DNA” with a 2.5 to 1 structural safety factor and integral torque box chassis. This continues E-ONE’s strong reputation of reliability in the industry thanks to a track record of more than 35 years building on the solid design elements of our aerial system.

Firefighter Safety Is Never Secondary

Firefighter Safety – Each year, an average of 100 firefighters die and 100,000 fire fighters are injured in the line of duty from a variety of causes including, but not limited to, extreme physical exertion, underlying medical conditions, and motor vehicle crashes. The United States Fire Administration (USFA), an agency of the Department of Homeland Security, cites motor vehicle crashes as the cause of death for between 20–25% of the annual line-of-duty fatalities. Motor vehicle crashes are the second highest cause of death for firefighters. The leading cause of death is stress and overexertion which accounts for approximately 50% of the fatalities. Other significant causes of death in the dataset include: caught/trapped (10%), fall (5%), collapse (3%) and other (7%) (United States Fire Administration, n.d.). Fire truck crashes, although rare in comparison to non-emergency vehicle crashes, tend to have grave consequences for firetruck occupants and for occupants in other vehicles involved in the crash. Despite revising national standards to improve firetruck safety and reduce firefighters’ risk of injury and fatality, the annual injury and fatality rate has remained essentially unchanged over the past decade. PMC

“Motor vehicle crashes are the second leading cause of death for on-duty firefighters. Fire truck crashes, occurring at a rate of approximately 30,000 crashes per year, have potentially dire consequences for the vehicle occupants and for the community if the fire truck was traveling to provide emergency services.

PROTECH System by E-ONE

E-ONE fire trucks are tested until they exceed SAE, ECE and NFPA standards. In fact, the E-ONE cab structure withstood over five times the static roof load and over twice the frontal impact required by the NFPA and SAE, making it the strongest fire truck cab in the industry. Every E-ONE fire truck cab is designed with a structural roll cage to provide maximum protection and the highest levels of performance — structural extrusions and sub-frames, full flange wishbone frame rail, center uprights and crossbeam extrusions. Every E-ONE fire truck comes with horizontal and vertical supports to carry vertical loads, thicker, 3/16” aluminum-alloy exterior skin material and more. On-site testing capabilities include tilt and stability, pump testing, cab water-leak testing, aerial stability testing on both flat ground and a five degree slope, weight scales, waterway flow testing, bumper turret under truck nozzle spray testing, load bank testing, and grade ability testing.

Because avoiding an accident is the best way to protect your crew and community, the PROTECH System by E-ONE features the unique OnGuard® collision warning and mitigation system, G4® (electronic stability control), the CrewGuard™ occupant detection system, a 360-degree camera system and backup sensors. Combined with protection, or as we like to call it, ProTech-tion, E-ONE provides the safest technology package for your crew.

  • Airbags: Driver front & knee, passenger knee, rear head curtains
  • OnGuard™: Collision Mitigation System
  • G4: Electronic Stability Control
  • Crew Guard: Occupant Detection System

E-ONE’s ProTech™ occupant protection system integrates the latest prevention and protection technology into our industry-leading apparatus designs to offer an all-encompassing safety technology package unlike any other in the industry.

E-ONE Roll Cage Cab Design

Each E-ONE custom cab is designed and built with a structural roll cage cab design to provide maximum protection for firefighter safety. Structural extrusions including sub-frames, a full flange wishbone frame rail, center uprights, and crossbeam extrusions are engineered for optimum performance. Horizontal and vertical supports handle severe vertical loads which can occur in accidents. The perimeter skin material is made of 3/16” aluminum-alloy sheet for added strength.

Airbags

Because accidents are sometimes unavoidable, E-ONE paired its industry-leading roll cage cab design, which exceeds NFPA and SAE re-quirements, with IMMI’s RollTek® and 4Front® technology to offer roll-over protection and frontal airbags for firefighter safety. Frontal protection locations include a steering wheel airbag, driver knee airbag and officer knee airbag – an industry first. When a roll-over or impact is detected, integrated seat belt pre-tensioners tighten, holding occupants firmly into place, and strategically placed airbags deploy to lesson the impact’s effects on the crew.

OnGuard

OnGuard, originally developed for the on-road trucking industry, was adapted in partnership with E-ONE and Meritor Wabco to meet the sensitive high-traffic situations often encountered by firefighters driving to and from calls. OnGuard detects developing rear end collisions and offers audible and visual warnings to the driver. When necessary, OnGuard automatically intervenes by de-throttling and aggressively applying the brakes to avoid or minimize the impact of an accident.

G4 Electronic Stability Control System

G4®, E-ONE’s exclusive electronic stability control system, ensures you make it to the scene quickly and safely, even when you’re behind the wheel of the heaviest of vehicles. G4 utilizes sensors on each wheel to constantly moni-tor driving conditions. When critical lateral acceleration is detected or if the tires begin to slip, the system intervenes to offer more stability during evasive maneuvers and more confidence behind the wheel.

CrewGuard

CrewGuard™, E-ONE’s occupant detection system, offers audible and visual warnings when crew members are not safely buckled in.

“Data from the United States Fire Administration and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that firefighters neglect to buckle their seat belts while traveling in a fire apparatus, thus putting themselves at a high risk for injuries if the truck crashes, especially in rollover crashes. Despite national regulations and departmental guidelines aiming to improve safety on fire apparatuses, belt use among firefighters remains dangerously low.”

PMC

Did you know that in 2006, the National Fire Service Seatbelt Pledge was created, after the tragic death of Firefighter Brian Hunton who died after falling from his fire truck on the way to a call? Dr. Burton Clark, a distinguished member of the fire service and training specialist at the National Fire Academy, was compelled to challenge firefighters to improve their personal safety by wearing their seatbelts. With website and administrative support from TrainingDivision.com and Firehouse.com, the National Fire Service Seatbelt Pledge was introduced to the American Fire Service.

In addition to the support of the National Fire Academy, fire service partners including: the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, the International Fire Chiefs Association (IAFC), National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have also joined the effort to eliminate firefighter injuries and line-of-duty deaths that can be prevented by seatbelt use.

Five years later, over 850 departments and 150,000 firefighters have signed the National Fire Service Seatbelt Pledge and committed to wearing their seatbelts. The reach of the Seatbelt Pledge has also spread beyond the borders of the United States. Firefighters in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and U.S. Military Bases around the world have recognized the importance of wearing their seatbelts and joined the effort to ensure Everyone Goes Home®.

Sign Up For The Seat Belt Pledge

“Motor vehicle crashes are the second-leading cause of firefighter fatalities in the United States and this effort aims to reduce the number of preventable fatalities,” said Chief Ronald J. Siarnicki, Executive Director of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. “Just as you need to get to the scene of a call quickly, you need to get there safely; buckling your seatbelt is the easiest safety measure you can take.”

Starting in 2011, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF), through its Everyone Goes Home® progam, will lead the nationwide efforts and provide additional resources and support for the program. Use of seat belts in department apparatus and personal vehicles is included in 16 Firefighter Life Safety Initiatives, a comprehensive list of steps established in 2004 to reduce the firefighter line-of-duty injuries and deaths. The program, relaunched as the International First Responder Seatbelt Pledge program, will make it even easier for first responders and departments to participate.

Aluminum versus Steel Aerial Ladders

E-ONE

Jim Salmi, the director of aerial product development for E-ONE, is considered one of the aerial gurus in the nation. He has more than 30 years of experience designing and building aerials, has been actively involved with industry organizations, serves as chairman of the aerial subcommittee of the Fire Apparatus Manufacturers Association (FAMA) and as a group chair for the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

“Ladder material has largely become a matter of department preference,” Salmi said. “It’s like the Ford or Chevy debate. When properly designed and validated, both are very viable materials to use for the fire service.”

He said a lot of people have strong opinions. “They’ll say ‘I hate Ford, but does Ford make a good pickup truck, yeah.’”

While it might be a matter of personal opinion about which material is better, there are differences, Salmi said. For example, steel has a higher resistance to heat and it is minimally affected by higher temperatures. Aluminum requires tempering to strengthen it, Salmi said. Virgin aluminum has a strength rating of 15,000 to 18,000 psi, which can be increased to 35,000 to 38,000 psi through heat treating.

Conversely, it takes less heat to take the tempering out of the aluminum than steel. The integrity of aluminum should be checked when it’s exposed to temperatures of 300 degrees Fahrenheit and above. Steel, on the other hand, can withstand temperatures of up to 800 to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit, Salmi said.

To make up the difference, aluminum ladder manufacturers use thicker materials, and can manage the weight because aluminum is one-third the weight of steel. Aluminum can also be extruded into shapes that are designed to handle stress and be stronger than the virgin material left alone.

“Lighter aerial devices can reduce the amount of outrigger stance needed for stability and reduce the set-up space,” Salmi said. “It comes down to which you are more familiar with. Chicago has steel and aluminum and they are happy with both materials.”

Salmi explained that steel has a greater surface hardness and it’s a tougher material whereas aluminum is not quite as resilient. The trade off is that steel is much more susceptible to rust and corrosion and it must be painted and sealed to keep out water, one of the key ingredients to rust.

“Steel ladder manufacturers go to great lengths to seal materials to prevent corrosion,” he said.

Aluminum, on the other hand needs very little to control corrosion, according to Salmi, who noted that aluminum doesn’t need any surface treatment. Some people like the look of the brushed swirling on the rails and other aluminum ladder components.

But, there’s a caveat to the corrosion issue, Salmi said. Aluminum and steel- and zinc-coated steel don’t like each other very much and if the materials touch each other, there can be corrosion on aluminum aerials as well, called galvanic corrosion. Salmi said aluminum is the sacrificial metal so it can possibly corrode when in contact with steel, stainless steel, or zinc-coated steels. So where the ladder interfaces with the turntable, or waterways, lights and other steel materials that get affixed to the aluminum aerial, there’s a chance for corrosion to occur. The designs most consider the means of isolation of the metals in areas of contact.

“So it goes both ways,” Salmi said of the corrosion issue.

Salmi also said aluminum extrusions mean the rungs can be shaped with tread grips already in place. On a steel aerial, the treads have to be affixed to the rungs by glue, epoxy or some other means.

Steel is an easier metal to weld than aluminum, according to Salmi, who noted that if a repair has to be made, there are generally more facilities with certified steel welders than aluminum. Steel welds can be visually and magnetic particle tested for defects and aluminum welds are normally visually inspected as well with an occasional use of dye penetrant to check for defects.

E-ONE, which is widely known for its aluminum aerial products, introduced a steel aerial last year. Salmi said it has nothing to do with one material being better than the other. Rather it has to do with competing in both the domestic and the world market.

Salmi said the international aerial market is dominated by steel and that has to do with the Germans who developed the first aerials, which were made of steel. So, that’s the material most of the world is familiar with.

“If you don’t have a steel product, you’re limited in the world market,” he said. “Steel is the standard in many countries around the world and if you don’t have it, you can’t compete.”

So from Salmi’s perspective, the debate is really one similar to the “Ford vs. Chevy” argument.

“The higher strength steels that are now available at 100,000 psi yield allow the weights of steel and aluminum devices to be very similar,” Salmi said. “There really is very little performance difference between well-designed aluminum and steel aerials.”
