Engine 65-3 has been retired from the PFD and is on it’s way to a fire department in the Country of Chile. She was driven away Sunday and has arrived at the Port of Baltimore on her journey to a new home.
It is not uncommon for older fire apparatus and construction/industrial equipment to find a new lease on life in Central and South America. This 1996 pumper was placed in service for the PFD in January of 2014. Originally, designed along with a twin pumper for the Wise Avenue Volunteer Fire Company of Baltimore County, MD, she also served the Needmore Volunteer Fire Company of Fulton County, PA. This pumper will be replaced with a new pumper-rescue. Delivery of this new unit is expected in early 2021.

Objectives:

  • Respect: We support the intentional affirmation that all human beings are gifted with life and uniqueness and deserve to be treated with dignity.
  • Integrity: We create and maintain an atmosphere of trust, honesty, sincerity, and unshakable professional ethics.
  • Compassion: We support the individualized caring and comforting offered as healthcare providers. We listen with sensitivity to others viewpoints, making every effort to hear rather than to judge, and using tact and diplomacy to resolve conflict.
  • Professionalism: We accept the challenge and responsibility to maintain the highest standard of excellence in Emergency Medical Services. We continually strive to determine and meet the needs of those we serve and measure our performance.

The History of The Palmerton Community Ambulance Association

Established in 1945, the Palmerton Community Ambulance was first housed at the “Old” West End Fire Company located in Palmerton, Pennsylvania. The building, till this point, was owned by the New Jersey Zinc Company, a cornerstone company for the small town.

In the late 60’s and early 70’s, two ambulances were purchased; one being stationed at the Palmerton Borough and the other at the West End Fire Company.

In 1972, Palmerton Ambulance incorporated, becoming a Community Non-Profit ambulance association.

In 1981, the Palmerton Ambulance Association bought Sander’s Colonial Oldsmobile Car Dealership, located on 501 Delaware Avenue, Palmerton.

Over the years following the purchase, the building went through renovations to accommodate two ambulances, allowing for the first time all ambulances and volunteers to be housed under the same roof.

In 1985, two new ambulances were purchased. Before this point, the Palmerton Community Ambulance was only operated by hard working local volunteers. Following the purchase, two full time Emergency Medical Technicians were hired to create the first paid emergency 8am to 4pm crew in Carbon County.

In 1998, the first para-transit van was purchased to be used for non-emergency wheelchair and stretcher transports. 1999, the old Palmerton Ambulance building was torn down and completely renovated between 1999 and 2000; all of the hard work, pain, and sweat, had finally paid off.

The Palmerton Ambulance building now facilitates a seven truck, four bay garage, spacious crew, storage, and computer rooms, multiple offices, male and female sleeping quarters, and a rentable wedding hall with kitchen, which is the current location for the Palmerton Senior Center.

AVAILABLE AMBULANCE TYPES

The Type I
The Type I ambulance is one of the most recognizable vehicles in the business. This Type I ambulance design is based on the chassis of a heavy truck. What sets it apart from others is that has a square patient compartment and is mounted on a truck-like chassis. A Type I is often heavy duty and has extra cargo capacity.

These ambulance type vehicles are typically used for Advanced Life Support (sometimes referred to as Mobile Intensive Care Units). Along with that they are also used for rescue work.

The Type II
The Type II ambulance vehicles are built onto a commercial van chassis. The roof is often raised to give personnel room to work. They also have a secondary air conditioning unit for the rear.

These ambulances are focused on safety and are often used to navigate cramped city streets where larger ambulances would not be able to easily fit. The patient compartment is not separate from the driving compartment which can make the operating space more cramped. However, the superb fuel efficiency makes them a good choice for longer transports.

For those needing a transport vehicle for Basic Life Support, the Type II ambulance is the ideal mode of carrying. The Type II ambulance can also be used for fewer routine scenarios like rescue work.

The Type III
The Type III ambulance class has a square patient compartment much like the Type I ambulance, but it is mounted on a cutaway van chassis. This gives it a more integrated area between the patient compartment and cab.

These ambulance types have more room for equipment and are commonly used in Advanced Life Support (ALS) situations just like the Type I ambulances. They can be used for specific assignments in chemical plants, airports, oil refineries, or other places where extra storage for equipment is necessary.
