1995 Spartan Ferrara Pumper

Four door enclosed Spartan Ferrara Pumper with seating for with 5. Powered by a Caterpillar 350HP and Allison automatic transmission. Hale 1500 GPM Pump with 750 gallon water tank. The truck is equipped with two 1.50″ and one 2.50″ crosslays above the pump panel. The drivers side pump panel has one 6″ and 2.5″ intake along with two 2.5″ discharges and the officers side pump panel has one 6″ and 2.5″ intake along with two 2.5″ discharge. The rear of the truck is equipped with two 2.5″ discharge. The truck is equipped with NFPA warning light and siren package. History

Manufacturers History

Spartan Motors was formed in Charlotte, Michigan in 1976 by four engineers from the bankrupt Diamond-REO truck company. Spartan designed and manufactured a custom cabover chassis for fire services. Like Duplex, Hendrickson, Oshkosh and Pemfab, Spartan supplied chassis to apparatus body manufacturers – this market niche falls between custom apparatus built entirely by apparatus manufacturers (like Pierce or E-One) and commercial chassis rigs like Ford, Freightliner or GMC. Unlike their specialty competitors, Spartan would build chassis to end-user specifications, enabling smaller body manufacturers to offer a custom apparatus option. The Spartan chassis was popular, and apparatus manufacturers throughout North America offered (and continue to offer) Spartan-chassis apparatus.

In the 1980s, Spartan also began to build custom chassis for motor homes.

Early models included the CFC, CFG and CFH chassis. The Gladiator was introduced in 1983 and continues to be one of Spartan’s most popular models. Other models introduced in the 1980s and 1990s included the Diamond, the Monarch, the rear-engine Silent Knight and the GT-One. The Metro Star and Advantage were introduced in the latter part of the 1990s and the Metro Star remains in production today.

Fire Body Manufacturing

Like a number of apparatus companies, Ferrara started with a local fire department that needed a truck and a firefighter who decided he could build one. Baton Rouge area pipefitter Chris Ferrara and fellow firefighters built a tanker for the Central Fire Department in 1979. The successful project led Ferrara to start a fire equipment distribution business called Ferrara Firefighting Equipment in 1982. FFE also acted as a full-scale service, warranty, and repair center for fire apparatus.

In the late eighties, Ferrara Firefighting Equipment began refurbishing trucks and assembling new ones using pre-built bodies. Ferrara Fire Apparatus was formed as a separate company in 1988, building custom-designed apparatus. In 1998, FFA introduced its first custom chassis, the Inferno. Intended as a premium chassis, the Inferno was followed by the mid-range Igniter.

In 1994, Ferrara opened a new plant in Holden. The facility was expanded in 2000, 2005 and 2009.

In April 2017, Ferrara Fire Apparatus announced the sale of its fire apparatus business to Florida-based REV Group.
