History

Quality Manufacturing Inc

Starting in 1962, Quality was a heavy equipment repair and refurbishing business. They began rehabbing military fire equipment.

In 1976, Quality started building new pumpers, tankers and other fire trucks on commercial chassis. Within years, Quality also built trucks on custom chassis and ladders trucks with Aerial Innovations Inc. and RK Aerials.

From the mid 1980s until their bankruptcy in 1992, Quality was owned by the Union City Body Co. In 1997, the company was purchased by Spartan Motors Inc. of Charlotte, Michigan. Spartan also acquired Luverne Fire Apparatus of Brandon, South Dakota. Between 1997 and 2003, Quality and Luverne continued to sell trucks independently, each serving a different geographical area.

In 2003, Spartan Motors merged Quality and Luverne into Crimson Fire, a new subsidiary company.

Aerial Innovations Inc.

Aerial Innovations Inc., commonly known as AI, was an American manufacturer of aerial ladder assemblies located in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. AI was founded in 1993 by Ladder Towers Incorporated (LTI) founder Mahlon Zimmerman. AI purchased LTI from the UK-based Simon Group in 1998, and was in turn purchased by American LaFrance in 1999. Ladders manufactured in Lebanon were built as part of the American LaFrance Aerials unit of the company. American LaFrance ceased operations in 2014.

Spartan Chassis

Spartan Motors was formed in Charlotte, Michigan in 1976 by four engineers from the bankrupt Diamond-REO truck company. Spartan designed and manufactured a custom cabover chassis for fire services. Like Duplex, Hendrickson, Oshkosh and Pemfab, Spartan supplied chassis to apparatus body manufacturers – this market niche falls between custom apparatus built entirely by apparatus manufacturers (like Pierce or E-One) and commercial chassis rigs like Ford, Freightliner or GMC. Unlike their specialty competitors, Spartan would build chassis to end-user specifications, enabling smaller body manufacturers to offer a custom apparatus option. The Spartan chassis was popular, and apparatus manufacturers throughout North America offered (and continue to offer) Spartan-chassis apparatus.

In the 1980s, Spartan also began to build custom chassis for motor homes.

Early models included the CFC, CFG and CFH chassis. The Gladiator was introduced in 1983 and continues to be one of Spartan’s most popular models. Other models introduced in the 1980s and 1990s included the Diamond, the Monarch, the rear-engine Silent Knight and the GT-One. The Metro Star and Advantage were introduced in the latter part of the 1990s and the Metro Star remains in production today.
