Description
An ignition switch, also known as a starter switch, is a switch in the control system of a motor vehicle that activates the main electrical systems for the vehicle, including “accessories” (radio, power windows, etc.).
The ignition switch is typically located on the steering column, and has several different positions:
- Off: This position disables all electrical systems in the vehicle.
- Accessory: This position powers the vehicle’s accessories, such as the radio, power windows, and headlights.
- On: This position powers all of the vehicle’s electrical systems, including the engine control unit and ignition system.
- Start: This position engages the starter motor, which turns over the engine.
